Herbie’s Law is an acknowledgment that things have to change.

 

But acknowledgment is not enough.

 

I am fighting for a timeline that doesn’t allow years more of suffering behind closed doors — because while we wait, animals continue to pay the price.

 

Every year in the UK, thousands of dogs — most of them beagles — are still used in experiments.

In 2023 alone, there were 3,749 procedures carried out on dogs 

 

Since 2015, nearly 16,000 beagles have been bred for UK laboratories 

 

And across all species, over 2.6 million animal experiments are still carried out every year in Britain 

 

This is legal.

In this country.

Right now.

 

These dogs are forced to inhale chemicals, swallow toxic substances, and endure invasive procedures.

 

Not just for medicine — but for chemicals, products, and systems that often never even reach or benefit humans.

 

Because here is the truth:

 

Animal testing does not reliably translate to humans.

Around 90% of drugs that pass animal testing fail in human trials due to lack of effectiveness or safety.

 

It is not only cruel — it is scientifically flawed.

 

And we already have better options.

 

Modern alternatives like:

 

Human cell-based testing
Organ-on-a-chip technology
AI and computational modelling

 

 

…can deliver faster, more accurate, and human-relevant results — without suffering.

 

Even the UK government has outlined plans to phase out animal testing — but the current timelines stretch years into the future.

 

And while policy moves slowly…

 

animals continue to suffer.

 

Beagles don’t have a choice.

But we do.

 

This is not necessary.

This is not justified.

And this is not progress.

 

We are the generation that can end this — not eventually, but now.
