Friends,
BC’s final results for the election are now confirmed - we are in a minority government. The seat results are as followed:
BC Liberals: 43 seats
BC NDP: 41 seats
BC Greens: 3 seats
This is an absolutely incredible milestone for our movement. Lana Popham (NDP Agriculture Spokesperson) and Andrew Weaver (BC Green Leader) both support our petition and together they make up more seats than the Liberals. This means that if we can rally either of these MLA’s to introduce legislation to ban battery cages the NDP and Greens can push this through regardless of Liberal opposition!
I’m going to be getting in touch with both Lana and Andrew through the summer to start on this and I will make sure that if we’re able to get one of them to introduce our requested legislation that it will include:
-A ban of ALL cages including battery cages and “enriched” cages (cages that are a bit bigger with some commodities)
-A phase out of cages that is quick, efficient and far shorter than the 2036 timeline being enacted by the Egg Farmers of Canada
We’re going to be mobilizing for the coming months and I will need every single one of you to be apart of this outstanding opportunity. We will not only need to pressure Lana Popham and Andrew Weaver to introduce our desired legislation, but if this legislation is introduced we will need to pressure every NDP and Green MLA to support that legislation in order for it to pass into law.
Here’s looking forward to the near future, it’s going to be exciting!
In solidarity,
Ned Taylor
