For instance, in vitro testing, where human cells are used, and advanced computer-modeling techniques can predict human reactions to substances far better than outdated animal models. Leading institutions, including Johns Hopkins University, advocate for such alternatives as they are often more cost-effective and efficient at producing accurate results.
Despite these advancements, millions of animals are still subjected to experimentation. According to the Humane Society International, rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, and other animals are all used in experiments that can result in extreme suffering. They experience everything from burns to poisoning, only to be killed when they are no longer useful for testing purposes. It's time we move past these primitive methods and adopt humane research practices that respect all forms of life.
The scientific community, alongside policymakers, must prioritize and implement these alternative testing methods. Governments worldwide should be urged to fund and encourage research that seeks cruelty-free solutions, dismantling the outdated reliance on animal testing.
