Ban animal racing in Sri Lanka

Ban animal racing in Sri Lanka
The Issue
Animal racing, known for its cruelty and danger, should be abolished. During this recent New Year celebration, numerous races occurred, posing threats to both animals and humans, as well as to public and private property. The animals involved in these races often run out of fear induced by riders, who inflict pain and abuse while surrounded by noisy spectators, causing immense stress and potential harm, including permanent injuries or death. These races, characterized by disorder and suffering, serve only as spectacles.
A recent incident in Kelaniya exemplified this danger when elephants ran amok, endangering lives. The use of bullhooks and chains to control the elephants further inflicts terror and pain. Additionally, accidents involving bullock carts resulted in injuries and property damage, while ponies were subjected to abuse when they refused to run.
Such acts not only tarnish Sri Lanka's reputation in the age of social media but also expose children in the audience to scenes inappropriate for their age, potentially desensitizing them to animal cruelty and fostering a generation lacking empathy and compassion.
Let's unite to end the cruelty of animal racing in Sri Lanka by signing the petition aimed at protecting lives and promoting compassion.
