The Issue

Growing up, I have always held a deep affection for animals. The love and care I extend to my own pets at home make me acutely aware of how each creature deserves a life filled with dignity, freedom, and the opportunity to live naturally. It breaks my heart to imagine any animal trapped in a world that is cruel, unnatural, and unfair – lives spent entertaining humans, far removed from the freedom of the wild.

Circuses and shows using live animals for entertainment perpetuate a cycle of exploitation and suffering. Animals used in these environments endure countless hardships, from living in confining cages to performing repetitive, unnatural acts. Elephants are shackled, big cats confined in cages, and other wild animals are deprived of their natural habitats. According to reports from animal welfare organisations such as the RSPCA, these conditions often lead to psychological distress and physical health issues among animals.

Currently, the UK has made strides in animal welfare by banning the use of wild animals in travelling circuses in 2020. However, loopholes still exist that allow other forms of entertainment to exploit animals for profit. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 mandates that animals must be protected from suffering, yet the continued use of animals in stationary circuses or in theatrical performances poses clear contradictions to this mandate.

We have an opportunity and a responsibility to close these gaps and set a global standard of compassion for animals. By banning all forms of circuses and shows that use live animals, we can pave the way for a future where all creatures are treated with respect and kindness. Such a move will align the UK with the growing global movement towards protecting every animal's right to live freely.

We call upon the UK Parliament to take this crucial step for the welfare of animals. Let us transform these outdated forms of entertainment into opportunities for education and inspiration about animals in their natural, unaltered state through virtual reality and animatronics.

Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to establish legal protection that ensures no animal is used for entertainment in circuses and similar shows in the UK.
