BAN AI USAGE FOR THE SST INTER-HOUSE ILLUSTRATION COMPETITION

The Issue

Before you do anything, please PLEASE read this.

The School of Science and Technology, Singapore(SST) is holding an Inter-House Illustration Competition for students to participate in, with the theme being anything from a book, fiction or non-fiction, from the cover to a scene in it. However, they are allowing the usage of AI as a means of participating.

AI “art” has been on the rise lately, allowing anyone to write a prompt and generate multiple images to choose from. With technology in the name, it would be reasonable to assume that AI would be used.

However, using AI would be unfair to people who actually put in effort to draw something meaningful.

And AI? It STEALS the work of a wide range of people that have not consented to their work being used in this way. And on top of that, those who use AI barely have to put in any effort at all, at most just finding the right words to make a prompt. Those people don’t understand that art is an expression of our creativity, and that our passion and the emotion put into it are what make the art art.

And as an alumnus, I am extremely disappointed that SST would even allow such a degree of laziness like this. If it required so much effort to get into SST, why would the school even consider entries with minimal creative effort, with the nature of the competition being centred around creativity? How is this fair to ANY of the artists in SST?

All in all, SST should not allow the use of AI as a means of illustration in the inter-house competition. It is unfair to anyone who actually puts in the effort to make something for the competition and gets overshadowed by someone who didn’t even make the piece they submitted. The deadline for the competition is 10 May 2024, so please do sign this petition as soon as possible. Thank you if you do.
