The Issue

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to create advertisements for products sold to consumers. While AI can be a useful tool, its use in advertising physical products such as food, medicines, supplements, and health-related items raises serious concerns about consumer protection, transparency, and public safety.

AI-generated advertisements can create unrealistic or misleading representations of products. Food may appear fresher, larger, healthier, or more appealing than the product customers actually receive. Medicines and health products may be presented in ways that exaggerate benefits or minimise risks, potentially influencing important health decisions.
Consumers have a right to make informed purchasing decisions based on accurate information. When AI-generated imagery, videos, or marketing materials are used without clear disclosure, customers may be misled about a product's appearance, quality, effectiveness, or intended use.

This is particularly concerning for products that can directly impact health and wellbeing. Advertising for medicines, supplements, and food products should be based on factual, verifiable information rather than computer-generated representations designed to maximise engagement or sales.

We call on the Government and relevant regulatory bodies to introduce legislation requiring:

Clear disclosure whenever AI-generated content is used in advertising.
Human review and accountability for all advertising relating to food, medicines, and health-related products.

Restrictions or bans on the use of AI-generated imagery and video where it could mislead consumers about a physical product.

Strong penalties for businesses that use AI-generated advertising to make false or deceptive claims.

Consumer trust is built on honesty and transparency. Advertising should accurately represent the products people buy, especially when their health and wellbeing may be affected.
Sign this petition to support stronger consumer protections and ensure that people are not misled by AI-generated advertising.
