Why this petition matters

Single use plastic bags are one of the biggest factors that are destroying the planet and the wildlife within it. Although plastic bags are not the sole contributors of plastic waste, they are one of the most prominent. According to fairplante.org, "sea animals are regularly found to be tangled up in plastic bags, with some even being choked to death by them". The sea animals, specifically turtles, mistake the bags for their food and the bags destroy the animals digestive systems. Plastic waste is also one of the main contributors of global warming which is harmful to the Earth's atmosphere, the air quality and the environment. Although elements of nature partially break down the plastic, the plastic, once created, is not ever completely eradicated from the Earth. The plastic then sits in landfills for years on end or is littered and eventually congregate in bodies of water. Implementing a 5 cent fee per plastic grocery bag used, will motivate customers to use reusable bags instead of constantly paying for the plastic grocery bags. I want to do my part in helping the environment with the plastic waste crisis as it needs as much help as it can get and therefore, decreasing my community's use of single use plastic bags will do that.
