Save the Local Tree Tunnels

Save the Local Tree Tunnels
The Issue
We are not against progress, just the destruction of the landscape. With funds from the Fish and Wildlife Commission, our local county government has plans of paving 100 miles of local dirt roads. Alot of these roads contain beautiful tree tunnels and the county is destroying the tunnels to make room for 40 foot roads with 20 foot easements on either side. Many tunnels have already been destroyed and lost forever.
Please do keep in mind that the whole point of these particular paving projects is to improve water quality by reducing erosion and run off from these red clay roads. As one commissioner put it, from the traffic standpoint alone, there is very little justification for paving. One option would be to simply leave the roads as they are but all the agencies and engineers are certain that water quality would continue to suffer. We understand that saving some of these tunnels is a double edged sword and not all of these tunnels can be saved. We need your help to raise as much awareness as possible and save as many tunnels as we can. There must be a solution to save the tunnels and save the watersheds from run-off as well. Please help us stop the destruction until the correct solution to this problem can be found.
