The Issue

UPDATE: Yesterday I called BCBE and expressed my feelings towards the dress code and was assured that my thoughts were heard, and that they'd stay in touch with me.
They then took it to the news (without telling me, mind you) and completely twisted my words to the public. First, I was advocating for nice solid colored shirts, not "tshirts" as they put it. I have nice dresses that don't have collars that I can't wear to school, which I bought just for school.
Secondly, they didn't even bring up the main contributor to why I was doing this petition, and that was because by the third day of school over twenty children were in OCS for dress code violations. I thought it was cruel to take kids who wore the same clothes last year, and didn't know until recently that those clothes weren't permitted. Those students learning was hindered because of a fold of a shirt.

Today, it was the third day of school. Today, my homeroom teacher walked into class and informed us that over twenty people were at On Campus Suspension (OCS) for dress code violations. Today, over twenty people sat in a room given assignments to do, with no help from a teacher. Today, over twenty students’ education were jeopardized due to their shirts not having a collar. Today, the fold of a shirt around our neck was more important than our education. Today, you told us where your priorities are. My name is Ashley Patterson. I am seventeen years old; I am a senior, and I have been in Baldwin County schools for thirteen years, and advanced placement classes for the past four. I never, in my thirteen year of schooling, have gotten written up, for dress code violation or otherwise. I have two younger brothers, one is a junior, the other- a freshman. We all attend Foley High School. As you can imagine, paying for new school clothes can be expensive for three children, so, to help out, I purchased my own. One week before school started I took my summer money and traveled to Cordova mall, and bought over two hundred dollars worth of clothes. Today, none of those clothes are “acceptable” to wear to school. Baldwin County Board of Education poorly notified parents and students on the change in our uniform policy. People received no email or calls to informing us on only allowing collared shirts. Weeks before the end of the previous school year I was asked to make a schedule to be prepared for the upcoming year. I was asked to give the school four months notice for this school year. Yet, Baldwin County Board of Education feels only four days of notice is sufficient for us. Parents and student were exasperated. It was now just days before school started, three days past tax free weekend, and there were still school fees to pay. We all hoped it would be overridden. But it hasn’t, and that’s why I’m creating this petition. This is not just an act of petty teenagers wanting to break the rules. These are members of a community who were not given enough notice on the change of dress code and are now struggling for it. Today, over twenty students’ education were jeopardized due to their shirts not having a collar. Today, I watched exhausted students, parents, teachers, and principals waste time of their day trying to fix this “problem.” Today I wanted to make a change. Today, I am going to take a stand. Please sign.

Edit: I was unfortunately misinformed and have since fixed it. Sorry about the false information, but the main idea still stands.
