Last year our professors went on strike because they were not covered under a union contract. Fortunately, they could afford strike which provided student support and media coverage which pushed for a quick response. However, this year, the officers of all PASSHE schools (Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock, and West Chester) are without contract due to the fact that they are being recognized under Act 195. The problem with this is that the officers are only being recognized as security guards when they are in fact sworn and armed officers. The officers of PASSHE schools are fighting to be recognized under Act 111 which protects policemen and firemen. Under Act 111 they will be able to be protected under the Heart and Lung Act which provides a safety and insurance for officers and their families if something were to happen to them while on duty. Even in non-threatening situations, our police officers are at a constant risk as we see in examples like the deadly shooting of an officer at the campus police station at Texas Tech a few weeks ago. Currently, more than 200 officers and families are being negatively affected due to not being protected under Heart and Lung. Please show your support for those who put themselves at risk every single day to serve, protect, and educate!
