Michelle Quintero-Millan started this petition to Bahraini King, Prime Minister, Minister of Justice and Islamic Affairs

Al Khawaja founded the Bahrain Center for Human rights in 2002 and has dedicated his life to peaceful political reform in Bahrain. In response to Al Khawaja's participation in protests, the government of Bahrain subjected him to arbitrary detention, torture and assault. Since his arrest in April 2011, the government has prohibited almost all communication with family members or his attorney. Al Khawaja was sentenced to life in prison, first by a secret military court and then through another highly questionable trial. Bahrain has failed to meet any and all of his due process guarantees. As a signatory, Bahrain must abide by its international obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which guarantees due process and protects against arbitrary and unfair judicial proceedings. In addition, the Convention against Torture prohibits Bahrain from engaging in torture.

Al Khawaja's appeal is before the Court of Cassation and is due on October 30, 2011.
