Bahrain Government - the right to be human?

Mr Nabeel Rajab was arrested and is, at the time of writing, in jail awaiting trial on charges of  incitement and defamation. .

The trial is due to take place on the 22nd May 2012

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) contains 30 Articles which have formed the basis of statutes; constituions; policies; contracts; international contracts; treates etc., and forms the basis of international law in connection with the treatment of men, women and children.  This convention, UDHR, was not signed by Bahrain and therfore Bahrain cannot be requested to adhere to it and in this regard the call, worldwide, is for Bahrain to review its human rights legislation.  Nabeel Rajab has campaigned for this for a long time and as a leading activist of the Bahrain Human Rights Society has come under much scrutiny and opposition.

Reform of the human rights legislation has been suggested, promised and discussed, the world continues to await the implentation of the findings of The Bahrain Independent Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) - a full 503 pages.

This enquiry was established on the 29th June by order of His Majesty, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and was commissioned to investigate and report on incidents relating to human rights from February of last year  - to date the findings of the report remain to be fully implemented. The  Findings were "presented" in November 2011, with a final revision be undertaken in December 2011.

Nabeel Rajab has been an active campaigner for the implementation of the findings of the report, todate those activities have been somewhat curtailed.

We repeat Article 1 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights:-

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."

Whilst we are aware that Bahrain was not a signatory to this Convention, we trust that a review of their human rights leglislation could be made.
