Backyard Chickens for New Whiteland

Backyard Chickens for New Whiteland
The Issue
I, like many others, have expressed their interest in raising chickens in New Whiteland. Raising chickens not only instills responsibility for our future generations, but also provides a source of self-sufficiency through the production of eggs, and could promote a better understanding for our children of where our food comes from.
Despite these benefits, current local ordinances do not allow residents to own chickens, depriving us of these opportunities. According to the CDC, backyard poultry can contribute to diet quality, food security, and overall well-being of families. Moreover, a study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science has shown that caring for chickens can have a therapeutic and educational benefit, enriching a child’s overall up-bringing (Frontiers in Veterinary Science, 2020).
This change wouldn’t just benefit individuals but also our community at large as chickens promote composting and naturally reduce the insect population. Rather than being handled by governmental pest control, chickens can provide a more environmental-friendly alternative.
We ask for your support to change the local ordinances and legalise chicken ownership. Please join us in not only ensuring the rich educational experience for our children, but also promoting environment-safe practices and food self-sufficiency. Sign the petition today.
