The Issue

As a resident of Battlement Mesa, I find it crucial that we have the right to own backyard laying hens, with the simple exception of not allowing roosters in the community. This is not only due to the rising cost of eggs, it's about a brighter future for our community and building a stronger community within.

A cost analysis report shows that the price of eggs increased by more than 30% over the past year (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics), making them less affordable for many families in our community. However, above economic benefits, there are educational and ecological advantages to owning hens. Raising hens encourages understanding of local food production among our children and reduces kitchen waste since hens consume kitchen scraps and provide rich compost for gardening.

Which could in turn benefit a community led garden if that idea also becomes reality. Promoting teamwork and good neighborly practices is one of many reasons to push this issue to the end.

Furthermore, owning backyard hens is legal in many urban and suburban communities across America including major cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Seattle ("Chicken Laws" by MAPC Publication). Therefore, it is time for Battlement Mesa to review restrictive laws preventing its residents from having similar rights. We are not asking for the freedom to own roosters - which can be disturbing - but for humane, manageable laying hens.

Engage with in promoting this sustainable practice and growth within Battlement Mesa. Please sign this petition urging our local government to allow the keeping of backyard laying hens.
