BackTheStars - Save Chandra - Increase NASA Space Observatories' Budget
The Issue
In March 2024, Congress released its proposed NASA budget for 2025. In this proposal, the Chandra Space Observatory, the only x-ray telescope in orbit, would have its budget cut by 40%. The science community rallied together in the Save Chandra movement, and Congress has agreed to pause its plan to cut Chandra's budget.
However, the job still isn't finished. Congress has only agreed to halt budget cuts until September 2025, and it is still estimated that Chandra will be forced to shut down from lack of funding and layoffs by 2029. The telescope could stay operational for a decade and shutting it down will make fields of astronomy that rely on x-ray light impossible until NASA builds a new x-ray telescope.
