The Issue

Oakland is a city known for its rich cultural history and profound resilience. It has been the birthplace of global culture and style, and its influence is felt in every corner of the globe. But at the core of this cultural upheaval stands a native icon who not only transformed the music industry but also brought Oakland into the national spotlight during challenging times—Stanley "MC Hammer" Burrell.

MC Hammer is more than just a musical legend; he is a beacon of hope and transformation. At a time when our community was struggling with the devastating impact of the crack epidemic, Hammer not only rose to global fame but also carried Oakland with him, showcasing our city’s spirit and determination. His music, philanthropy, and unwavering dedication to his roots have inspired countless individuals and uplifted our community time and again.

Despite his monumental contributions, employing over 200 plus local young people in Oakland at premium wages and even helped Oakland Police Department by acting as a peace keeper and anti-violence, anti-crime advocate, there’s no permanent tribute to honor his legacy in the very streets he helped transform. It’s high time we change that. That’s why we are launching the MC Hammer Legacy Monument Initiative on High Street, to etch his name in the history that he helped create, right here in Oakland.

This initiative will not only commemorate Hammer’s incredible contributions to music and culture but will also serve as an enduring reminder of his impact on the community. The monument will embody the spirit of resilience and triumph over adversity, reminding future generations of young people what it means to dream big, make it  and give back.

We need your help to make this vision a reality. We seek your support in urging local authorities, city planners, and cultural organizations to back this initiative. With your signatures, we can present a powerful, unified voice that demands recognition for our hometown hero.

Join us in this campaign to honor MC Hammer’s legacy and ensure that his story continues to inspire and empower the next generation. Sign this petition, and let's create a landmark that Oakland can be proud of for years to come. Together, let's celebrate the legacy of a true pioneer and a beloved son of our community.

“Thank you to everyone who has signed this petition in support of the MC Hammer Legacy Monument Initiative. Oakland has a proud history of honoring the people who have made a big contribution to our city. We’ve done tributes for Oaklanders like Too $hort, and MC Hammer’s impact on this community, both through his music and the way he gave back, is well worth recognizing. We’re ready to move forward on this, and we’re ready to work with you. Before we do, though, I want to make sure that a tribute like this is something MC Hammer and his immediate family support. I’d like to speak with him directly to hear what he would recommend and make sure we honor his legacy in a way that’s right for him and his family. If anyone in the community is able to help connect me with MC Hammer or his immediate family, I’d be grateful. Please reach out to my office at ngallo@oaklandca.gov. Thank you for your support and for helping celebrate one of Oakland’s own. — Noel Gallo, Oakland City Council, District 5”
