Time to stop the antlerless Whitetail deer general open season
The Issue
Time to stop the Antlerless WHITETAIL general season in B.C.
To all the supporters of the 2019 run of this petition, thank you for your support
While progress has been made with the shortening and removal of the antlerless season the carnage to our whitetail population continues to be left unchecked and unmonitored. Combined with the increase in predation the last few years the numbers continue to steadily decline, this is also reflected in the number of juvenile bucks decreasing as well due to the harvest of fawns. 2022 regulations need to be changed in order for any hope of an increase in populations. Please join me once again in the fight to take politics out of our wildlife management. Much more needs to be accomplished in order to restore wildlife and habitat in many areas of BC.
Below is the original petition, our voices made a difference at the time but we now need to grow even more to become stronger and louder to continue the fight.
Starting 2010 a general open season for Antlerless Whitetail deer was initiated in B.C., At this time the general Whitetail population was thriving in most areas of the Province and increased hunting and was considered a viable option to help maintain a healthy and sustainable population, this allowed more hunting opportunities with a higher success rate.
The problem? For 11 years this harvest of Does, Fawns and first year Bucks has been left unchecked and the effects that this has had in numerous areas with increased hunting pressure, higher harvest rates and a growing predator population is becoming of great concern to many people who are participants in outdoor recreation express that Whitetail sightings are becoming increasingly scarce in many traditional areas and total disappearance in some fringe areas. The main concern is for how long can this carry on for before it's no longer sustainable.
"WE" The signers of this petition urgently request that all recipients of this petition consider and act upon the requests of the signers provided.
Closure of the 2010 General Whitetail Antlerless season until such time as sound and scientific research along with input from the public and various outdoor agency's and associations familiar with their local Whitetail populations and habitat based on an area by area evaluation have been completed. Should such results show the need for further reduction be required in certain areas then accurate harvest stats should be maintained such as mandatory reporting until desired population densities are met.
