Posted July 27, 2016 Blue Green Algae Found in Kellis and Sagaponack Pond Blue Green algae has struck the East End again. On July 22, scientists from Stony Brook University recognized potentially dangerous blue-green algae blooms in Sagaponack Pond in Sagaponack and Kellis Pond in Bridgehampton. “Our lab is the NYSDEC downstate monitoring and testing facility for blue green algae, so my lab identified the blooms and reported them to the NYSDEC. We will continue to monitor Sagaponack Pond and Kellis Pond and other east end lakes and ponds through the fall and will continue to share our results with NYSDEC so they can help protect the public,” said Stony Brook scientist, Christopher Gobler. “Blue green algae contain compounds that can be a health threat to animals and humans. For example, more than 130 people got sick last week from recreating in Lake Utah,” he added. “Dogs have gotten sick and died in East Hampton due to blue green algae.” Other places where these blue green algae blooms have been found on the East End include Old Town and Agawam Ponds in Southampton, Wainscott Pond in Wainscott, Georgica Pond in East Hampton and Mill Pond in Water Mill. All of these bodies of water are listed on the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Harmful Algal Bloom Notification page. Residents that live close to these ponds are urged to stay away from the water, especially children and pets. Share This!
