Save Mhatoba Tekadi, Hill Slope and eco-sensitive zone….

After regular walkers and nature lovers at Mhatoba tekdi near New India School, Right Bhusari Colony in Kothrud raised concerns over illegal constructions taking place on the eco-sensitive hill slope, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has demolished the temporary structures. However, tekdi lovers fear the activity may soon resume and, hence, are preparing for a signature drive to save the hill. This petition is a part of this signature drive.

Tekdi behind the New India School, spotted illegal activities of trees being cut and structures being built. This is a BDP zone to be specific Sr. No 95/1/a, near New India School, right Bhusari colony Pune 411038. We  approached the civic body’s tree authority and ward office with our complaint. We raised concerns and highlighted the threat of unauthorised construction of residential projects on the ecosensitive hill slope.

Acting on our complaints, the PMC’s garden department sent a notice to the developer for illegally cutting and burning trees and bushes which is a violation of the Tree Act, 1975. The building department also demolished the temporary structure built on the slope.

As it is an eco-sensitive reserved hill slope, construction is illegal there. Soon after our complaint, the PMC did take action on the issue, which is appreciable. It is important to raise a voice against illegal activities and report them to the concerned authorities. There are very few hills left in our city and these miscreants wants to destroy all these lungs of our city. We need to save our hills and trees or otherwise in future our next generation will not be able to have the pleasure of nature. We must be proactive in such cases. Although the illegal structure has been razed, we fear that the activity will resume again after some time. We have come to know that even after the PMC action, the developer is advertising to sell the plots. He is advertising that he has applied for NA proposal for this BDP land.

There should be strict action on such illegal activities. The civic body should take measures to prevent such incidents. They should randomly visit such places to keep a check on any illegal activities. We have got information that some developers are in the process to approach the PMC to de-register the zone from the BDP so that they can carry out construction activities. Our request to officials that please do not remove BDP from this area.

However, we don’t want to lose our city’s lungs and open spaces. Considering this, we at the tekdi group have decided to collect signatures from like-minded people to support our cause. We do not want the PMC to de-register the zone from BDP and allow construction at this place and even at any hill top and hill slop. We request all nature lovers to support our movement to save hills, open spaces and BDP projects from miscreants.
