MAJID TAVAKKOLI was arrested on December 7, 2009, after giving a speech at a student demonstration, and sentenced to a total of 9 years imprisonment at a trial that his lawyer was not permitted to attend.  He was also reportedly beaten and otherwise mistreated, and has been denied needed medical care. His sentence contravenes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 19, which guarantees freedom of opinion and expression, as well as the Iranian Constitution, Article 24, which also promises freedom of expression.  We therefore urge that MAJID TAVAKKOLI be immediately and unconditionally released from prison and given appropriate medical treatment.
