Writer beloveds,
AWP sent an update to their policy banning vigils and protests on February 25. The text of the email that went out is below, describing what amounts to a Free Speech Zone. This still strikes us as censorship. Walled off, segregated speech is never free.
We'll be delivering the petition to the AWP leadership via email on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, but will leave it open so you can continue to sign and share.
Thank you!! Solidarity and love.
"We recognize that this is a moment when writers, educators, and artists feel called to gather and make their voices heard while at conference. AWP fully supports freedom of speech and expression for all attendees, exhibitors, and presenters. With the help of #AWP26 attendee advocacy, AWP leadership has successfully reengaged in conversations with the Baltimore Convention Center for approval of our monthslong request for an on-site designated gathering space. Like in Los Angeles for #AWP25, the designated space will be clearly marked directly outside of the main Charles Street Lobby entrance at the convention center."
