Awareness of Drug Abuse in Teens
The Issue
Extensive research about drug abuse in teens shows that about 4 in 10 students, 9th through 12th grade, reported having tried cigarettes. Cigarettes contain more than 4,000 chemicals, including ammonia, and very high levels of nicotine. Inhalants like this increase the risk of damage to heart, lungs, liver and kidneys from long-term use. Alcohol is classified as a Central Nervous System (CNS) depressant. When young people start drinking alcohol, it slows down their brain functioning, neural activity, and further reduces the functioning of various vital functions in the body. Research shows that people who get addicted at a young age are more likely to stay addicted through adulthood. There needs to be more education happening in health classes so that teens who might struggle with this in the future are aware of the risks.
