Award the Medal of Honor to the Midway Six
The Issue
At the Battle of Midway, six American naval aviators helped change the course of World War II through courage, leadership, and action under impossible odds. Their names are Commander Clarence Wade McClusky, Lieutenant Commander Max Franklin Leslie, Lieutenant Commander Eugene Edward Lindsey, Lieutenant Commander Lance Edward Massey, Lieutenant Commander John Charles Waldron, and Lieutenant Richard Halsey Best.
Together, they represent the finest tradition of American service. They flew into danger when the outcome of the Pacific War was still uncertain. They pressed the attack against a powerful enemy fleet. They led men into combat knowing the odds were brutal. Some gave their lives. All gave America a victory that helped turn the tide of the war.
Commander McClusky’s persistence helped locate the Japanese carrier force at the critical moment. Lieutenant Commander Leslie led his dive bombers into one of the most important carrier attacks in naval history. Lieutenant Commander Lindsey led torpedo bombers into the face of overwhelming enemy fire. Lieutenant Commander Massey pressed his attack with extraordinary courage. Lieutenant Commander Waldron led Torpedo Squadron 8 into a heroic assault that has become one of the most famous acts of sacrifice in American military history. Lieutenant Best helped deliver devastating blows against the Japanese carrier force and played a central role in one of America’s greatest battlefield victories.
These men helped secure a turning point for the United States, the Allied cause, and the free world. The Battle of Midway was a victory of American skill, American courage, American sacrifice, and American resolve. The Midway 6 stood at the center of that victory.
Yet these six heroes have not received the Medal of Honor.
This petition calls on the President of the United States, the Secretary of the Navy, the Secretary of Defense, and members of Congress to support the formal review and action necessary to award the Medal of Honor to the Midway Six.
America should know their names. America should celebrate their courage. America should honor their legacy with the highest military recognition our nation can give.
Please sign this petition and help secure Medal of Honor recognition for the Midway Six.
