Award Robert Lewandowski the 2020 Ballon d’Or Retroactively: Rectifying Football History
The Issue
To France Football, Groupe Amaury, UEFA, and football fans around the world,
We are calling on France Football to reconsider its decision to leave the 2020 Ballon d'Or unawarded and to officially recognize Robert Lewandowski as its rightful winner.
In 2020, the Ballon d'Or was cancelled for the first time in its history because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We understand that it was an incredibly difficult year for football and that the decision was made under unusual circumstances.
But six years later, one thing still feels wrong: Robert Lewandowski produced one of the greatest individual seasons football has ever seen, yet he never even had the opportunity to compete for its most prestigious individual award.
What Lewandowski achieved in the 2019/20 season deserves to be remembered.
Playing for Bayern Munich, he accomplished something extraordinary:
- 55 goals in just 47 appearances. These were not simply impressive numbers. He finished as the top scorer in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and UEFA Champions League, demonstrating incredible consistency throughout the season.
- A historic treble with Bayern Munich. Lewandowski helped lead Bayern to victory in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League. Winning all three major competitions in a single season is a remarkable achievement, and he was at the heart of that success.
- 15 Champions League goals in just 10 matches. He was outstanding throughout Bayern's European campaign, scoring against some of the best teams in the world and playing a crucial role in bringing the Champions League trophy back to Munich.
- Recognition as the world's best player. Although the Ballon d'Or was cancelled, Lewandowski went on to win both The Best FIFA Men's Player award and UEFA Men's Player of the Year in 2020. His achievements were recognized at the highest level of the sport.
These are not just opinions. These are achievements that happened on the pitch, against real opponents, in the biggest competitions in football.
Of course, nobody can know with absolute certainty how the Ballon d'Or voting would have ended. But looking at everything Lewandowski accomplished that season, it is difficult to argue that anyone had a stronger case.
The pandemic may have interrupted football, but it did not erase what the players achieved.
Lewandowski still trained, competed, scored, and helped his team win the biggest trophies. He dedicated himself to his profession, just as he had throughout his career. None of that should be forgotten simply because the world was going through an unprecedented crisis.
This petition is not about disrespecting Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, or any other footballer. Every great player deserves recognition for what they have accomplished.
It is about giving Robert Lewandowski the recognition that so many football fans believe he earned.
The Ballon d'Or has always represented excellence, dedication, and achievement. For generations, winning this award has been one of the greatest dreams a footballer can have.
And for Lewandowski, 2020 should have been his moment.
We cannot go back and change what happened during the pandemic. But we can ask whether a decision made during such an extraordinary time should remain unchanged forever.
France Football has the opportunity to acknowledge a season that deserves a place in football history.
We respectfully ask France Football, Groupe Amaury, and UEFA to reconsider the 2020 decision and find a way to officially award Robert Lewandowski the 2020 Ballon d'Or.
This is not about giving him something he didn't earn. It is about recognizing everything he did.
Football history should remember the players who gave us unforgettable moments, and Robert Lewandowski's 2020 season was undoubtedly one of them.
If you believe Robert Lewandowski deserved the 2020 Ballon d'Or, please sign and share this petition.
Let's make sure one of the greatest seasons in football history receives the recognition it deserves.
