We are deeply saddened by the loss of a true hero, Private Jess Larochelle, who passed away at the age of 40. His brave defense of a strongpoint in Afghanistan earned him Canada’s second-highest award for valour, the Star of Military Valour. This award was given to only 20 Canadians for their actions in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, Private Larochelle was unable to attend the award ceremony and received his medal on the day he left service.

However, we believe that his bravery and sacrifice deserve even higher recognition - The Victoria Cross - which is Canada's highest military honour. It is reserved for those who have shown extraordinary valour and devotion to duty while facing a hostile force.

Private Larochelle's actions during that firefight in Afghanistan were nothing short of heroic. He stood his ground against overwhelming odds and protected his comrades with unwavering courage and determination.

By upgrading Private Jess Larochelle's Star of Military Valour to a Victoria Cross posthumously, we can ensure that his bravery is recognized appropriately and remembered forever in our nation's history.
