Why this petition matters

Started by Joyce Cohen

Dogs are treated inhumanely in puppy mills.  They live in wire and mesh cages stacked on top of each other so dogs above relieve themselves on the ones below.  They never have to take the dogs out of the cages. They don't have to interact with other dog or humans. They don't get proper veterinary care.  When they are done with the dog, at about age five, they can dispose of the dog however they chose.  Dogs that make it out often can't walk because they are kept in cages only six inches bigger than the dog.  They often produce sick puppies.  Pet stores are the ones buying from puppy mills, so by banning the sale of puppies (and kittens) in pet stores, you help eliminate need for puppy (and kitten) mills.  People are not aware that when they buy a puppy or kitten in a pet store that the animal's mother was kept in such horrific conditions.  Often, people who buy animals in pet stores wind up spending a fortune the first few months because the animals are so sick. (Look at the CDC website and search puppy mills).  Nine towns in Colorado have passed the ordinance so far.  Avon needs to tell people it values the humane treatment of animals.  It also sends a message to the State that this ban should be statewide!
