Requiring Masks in Avon Lake City Schools
The Issue
As no online/remote learning option is available for children attending Avon Lake City Schools this 2021-2022 school year, all students will be required to attend class in person. It was recently announced, by the Avon Lake Board of Education, that masks will be optional in all schools, regardless of vaccination status. In order to protect the safety and health of the children, the teachers and the staff, masks must be mandated while indoors in Avon Lake City Schools until all school age children are eligible to be vaccinated.
There is no COVID vaccine available for children younger than 12 years old. Masks are scientifically proven to slow the spread of COVID, regardless of vaccination status but especially amongst unvaccinated individuals. The medical evidence is clear and readily available to everyone. The messages from the CDC, The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Ohio Department of Health are aligned and straightforward. Masks help prevent and slow the transmission of COVID. The science has proven this FACT.
Other surrounding communities have implemented some type of mandated masking rule to start the school year. As of August 14th, numerous school districts have mandated masks for either all children or those specifically unable to be vaccinated (under 12 years old) and these include: Bay Village, Cleveland, Garfield Heights, Lake Ridge Academy, Lorain, Lakewood, Rocky River, Solon, Shaker Heights, Twinsburg, and others. https://fox8.com/news/masks-in-schools-who-wants-kids-to-mask-up-this-fall-in-ohio/
The rampant spread of COVID variants in our community makes masking even MORE important, as the variants are more likely to cause severe illness, hospitalization and death...even in children. Dr. Claudia Hoyen, Director of Infectious Control at UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital has stated that the delta variant is very different than previous variants, stating, "It's not the elderly this time. It's the children. Things are certainly starting to increase in terms of the number of kids that we're seeing." https://fox8.com/news/ohio-experts-concerned-over-growing-impact-of-delta-variant-on-kids/
An outbreak of COVID19 in our schools would be disruptive to our children's continued education, potentially deadly for adults and children alike and will increase the spread of COVID into the community.
Please help us convince the Avon Lake Board of Education to take the necessary measures to keep our children, our teachers, our staff and our community safe by implementing a mandatory masking policy for the start of the 2021-2022 school year. The stakes are simply too high. We must come together and make our collective voices heard in order to make this necessary change.
