Pay for My Cancer Meds!

I am an award winning lifestyle/travel blogger, as well as a wife, mother and grandmother. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer in August 2013. I have successfully fought off cancer twice, using traditional chemotherapy methods. I am now in my third battle.

This time, my doctor at the University of Miami's Sylvester Cancer Center has prescribed 2 oral chemo drugs, as part of a research study. I've been taking one of them since October, but been fighting with my insurance company (Avmed) since then to get the other drug, as it is a very expensive one. My local pharmacy advised that if I wanted to pay for it myself, it would be $18k for 30 pills (one month supply) . Recently, Avmed they rendered a decision. Denied because this drug is not FDA approved for my cancer. But, wait. Did I mention that the drug that I'm taking and they are already paid for is not FDA approved for my cancer either. There are only a handful of drugs that are approved for me. They haven't worked. In the interim, my cancer has grown and continues to spread. I am desperate to get this drug that may save my life.

This shouldn't happen to a person with "really good" medical insurance, should it? This shouldn't happen to a person that pays more than $600 per month for health insurance, should it? Don't I deserve every treatment option available? Does my life has a price tag on it?

Unfortunately, this isn't just my story. This is happening to millions of other men, women and children in our country who did everything right and still can't save their own lives. Is it not enough that we fight this dreadful disease? Why must we be forced to fight the very people that we pay to help us? Help me fight for those without my vast social media reach. Help me fight for who will die without medicine.

Let's take a stand against AvMed and the health insurance industry. I deserve to live!

Many thanks in advance for your help!
