Autistic Child Crisis Center

Autistic Child Crisis Center

The Issue

A Petition To The Governor

Dear Governor Murphy,

I am writing to you as a concerned parent of a non-verbal autistic child who has been struggling with the lack of resources and support for children like mine, particularly during the most challenging moments of their lives.

Like many families, we face the harsh reality that, when our child is having a meltdown, we are often left to navigate these crises alone, particularly during the late-night hours when there is little to no support available. These meltdowns can be overwhelming and distressing, not only for the child but also for the entire family. In these moments, we feel desperate for help. Unfortunately, there is no readily accessible crisis care option for children with autism in New Jersey that can provide the immediate assistance we need.

I am asking you to consider the creation of a 24/7 crisis care center specifically designed for autistic children—places where trained professionals, including occupational therapists and nurse practitioners, are available around the clock. These centers could serve as a critical lifeline for families during meltdowns, behavioral crises, or other emergencies, ensuring that children receive the care they deserve in a safe and supportive environment.

Currently, families like mine are left with limited options—often either waiting hours for an appointment with a specialist, or managing an escalating crisis on our own. For children who cannot verbally express their needs and who experience extreme distress, this lack of appropriate resources only exacerbates their struggles and harms family well-being.

Autism is not going away, and neither are the urgent needs of these children. By investing in 24/7 crisis care centers, we would be creating an essential support system for families, enhancing the well-being of children, and improving the overall quality of life for the autism community in New Jersey.

I sincerely hope that you will take action on behalf of countless families in need. I trust that you understand the urgency of this issue, and I am hopeful that your leadership will bring about meaningful change for children with autism in our state.

Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to your response and am available to discuss this matter further at your convenience.

Sincerely,

Bowen Stephenson (Dad)
