Authorize county-level child abuser registries statewide in Ohio
The Issue
The recent tragic deaths of young souls like Amor Wilson and Mila Chatman have shaken our community to its core. Every day, children in Ohio grapple with the harsh realities of abuse, neglect, and endangerment from those who should be their protectors. This petition arises from a place of personal loss and determination to ensure that no child suffers in silence.
I speak from the heart and from a place of understanding, having been there myself. From the tender ages of 5 to 13, I was trapped in an abusive household. To the outside world, I seemed fine, but internally, my life was a constant battle, a struggle to hold onto my childhood amidst a backdrop of fear. This painful chapter inspired me to become a child's advocate, passionately pushing for reforms that could safeguard others from similar experiences.
One actionable solution to combat child abuse in our state is the establishment of county-level Child Abuser Registries. Unlike the state-wide notification that might miss local nuances, a county-level registry provides precision in monitoring and addressing abuse. Such a registry would not only serve as a crucial tool for local law enforcement but also empower communities with credible information to protect their children.
According to Child Welfare Information Gateway, robust tracking systems and community vigilance are pivotal in preventing child abuse. Some states have already implemented similar registries, and have seen marked improvements in both child safety and community awareness.
The Ohio Legislature has the power and responsibility to implement such measures. By authorizing county-level Child Abuser Registries, they will be taking a significant step towards a safer future for the children of Ohio. This initiative would not only create a deterrent for potential abusers but also offer a critical layer of protection for our most vulnerable.
But legislation alone isn’t enough. It requires all of us – parents, teachers, neighbors, and friends – to remain vigilant, report suspected abuse, and support these children.
Join me in calling on the Ohio Legislature to prioritize the safety and well-being of our children by authorizing these county-level registries. Let our collective voices inspire change and protect Ohio's future generations. Please sign this petition and stand up for a brighter, safer tomorrow.
