Authorize County Commissioners to Address/Advance Citizen Initiative Petitions

Authorize County Commissioners to Address/Advance Citizen Initiative Petitions
The Issue
Petition to Governor Kevin Stitt and Attorney General Gentner Drummond
Subject: Authorizing County Commissioners to Address and Advance Citizen Initiative Petitions on Green Energy Projects
To: Governor Kevin Stitt and Attorney General Gentner Drummond
We, the undersigned citizens of the State of Oklahoma, hereby petition Governor Stitt and Attorney General Drummond to take the following actions to safeguard and respect the will of Oklahoma citizens:
- Authorize and Instruct County Commissioners to Address Citizen Initiative Petitions: We request that county commissioners in all Oklahoma counties be authorized and instructed to receive, review, and take appropriate actions on citizen initiative petitions specifically related to green energy projects, including but not limited to industrial wind turbines and solar farms. It is the duty of county commissioners to protect the health and welfare of the people.
- Permit Citizen Petitions Meeting Constitutional Requirements to Proceed to a Ballot: Any citizen petition that meets the requirements of the Oklahoma State Constitution, including the required number of verified signatures, must be allowed to proceed to a ballot for a countywide vote. This ensures that the voices of local residents are heard and respected on issues directly impacting their communities.
3. Respect Local Governance and Citizen Input: Decisions on green energy projects often carry profound implications for the environmental, economic, and social fabric of local communities. Allowing citizens to participate directly in such decisions through initiative petitions and ballots aligns with democratic principles and reinforces public trust in government.
Purpose of This Petition:
The rapid development of green energy projects across Oklahoma has raised significant concerns among citizens about the potential impacts on their communities, including environmental risks, effects on property values, and overall quality of life. Local citizens must have the opportunity to determine the suitability of such projects in their own counties.
By enabling county commissioners to address citizen petitions and advancing qualifying petitions to the ballot, this measure will:
• Empower local residents to have a say in the projects affecting their communities.
• Enhance transparency and accountability in green energy development.
• Foster trust between citizens and government officials.
We urge Governor Stitt and Attorney General Drummond to take immediate action to uphold the democratic rights of Oklahoma citizens and to authorize this process statewide. I know this issues was also addressed in a letter to AG Drummond on 11/14/24 by Jeff McCommas.
Signatures:
We, the undersigned citizens of Oklahoma, affirm our support for this petition and request that the above measures be implemented promptly.
