Gerick Goldwyn started this petition to Australians

For me and millions of other people, our reasons for celebrating Australia Day are our own, just like when we celebrate Easter and Christmas.

Originally, many people celebrated Easter and Christmas for religious or spiritual reasons. Some still do, but most don’t. For them, it is a time for friends, family, and loved ones. And so it is with Australia Day. If individuals wish to mourn, I respect their right to do so. However, I know many Indigenous people, such as Aboriginal activist Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, who are in no way suffering or offended by Australia Day celebrations. On January 26 they do not mourn, they celebrate, which suggests to me it is not the date that causes them harm; if it was the cause, then all Indigenous people would be upset or oppressed or in mourning. As a result, I believe Australia Day should be celebrated in the same way as New Year's Day. We recognise and acknowledge the past, while hoping for a brighter future.

As Australians we have the right to celebrate our wonderful country and show our pride in the nation we’ve become. If you also agree, please sign this petition today so future generations can celebrate the birth of modern Australia on January 26.
