Pass Legislation Prohibiting Forced Sterilization in Australia

Pass Legislation Prohibiting Forced Sterilization in Australia

The Issue

Despite Australia's status as a developed first-world country, the forced sterilization of disabled women and girls- an outdated procedure that constitutes torture under international law- still occurs in the country today. It is often done without the family presenting a case to the Family Court of Australia, which usually grants the sterilization. Although many families of disabled women and girls do not go directly to the government, Australia is aware of the procedures occurring but refuses to pass legislation strictly prohibiting the process.
