In response to the petition with 3000 signatures sent on the 6/8/2020  Greg Hunt responded on the 14/7/2021. Despite 'Better Access' being the main lever that has been pulled by the Federal Government to improve mental health (doubling of sessions, increased remuneration for clinical psychologists, telehealth measures), Greg Hunt states 'Better Access' is being 'comprehensively' evaluated and the MBS Review Taskforce (made up mostly by psychologists) will guide any reforms to include other professional groups. Meanwhile, it is nice to hear that Mental Health Nurses are apparently valued and the $478.2 million to extend headspace centres and adult equivalents will provide "opportunities to employ mental health nurses as part of multidisciplinary teams". Greg Hunt also pointed out the tokenistic funding to provide scholarships for nurses, psychologists and allied health professionals. Australia does not have a skills shortage. Some of the most able and qualified professionals in Australia are underemployed. Please see the attached op-ed regarding why Australia's investment in 'treatment' is unlikely to lead to better outcomes.
