Over an estimated 25,000 Australians are registered with DFAT as still being stuck overseas, unable to get back to their home. Many people have ended leases, sold house and now remain homeless due to flight cancellations and changes caused by the flight restrictions/caps. Many people have missed funerals, weddings, seeing sick loved ones, job opportunities and the list goes on. The current cap on international arrivals is 4,000 a week and has been increased to 6,000 a week. This is not enough to get us all home. Melbourne Airport remains closed. I personally have had 8 flight cancellations, my original flight date was the 28th of July. My current flight date is now 18th of December with no guarantee that will go ahead either. People will be forced to spend christmas away from loved ones - or even, with a bit of luck, quarantining in a hotel room, but this is the least of our problems. We are happy to do hotel quarantine as we understand its importance to control the spread of the virus, we just want to get home to our family, friends and jobs. We are not travellers, we have had lives in other countries as well but its time for us to return to our home country, Australia.
