Why this petition matters

Started by Molly Quinnell

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up around 2% of the population, yet they constitute 27% of the national prison population. Aboriginal youth are 23 times more likely to be jailed than non Indigenous kids.

In addition to this, at least 400 Aboriginal people have died in police custody over the last 30 years.

The government has done nothing to even try to stop this and bridge the gap. This injustice has not been largely reported on; in fact, most Australians aren't even aware that this problem exists.

This is institutionalised racism. It is leading to the deaths of many undeserving Aboriginal people, and it needs to be stopped.

This petition is about awareness. It's about pressure. It's about showing the Australian government that we will not sit by and let our Indigenous people suffer at their hands.

Aboriginal lives matter.
