SIGN TO REJECT SURVEILLANCE POWERS INTO ONLINE ACTIVITY. CONDEMN TARGETING OF ANY MUSLIM RETURNING FROM IRAQ AND SYRIA. REFUSE PARTNERING WITH GOVERNMENT ON BRUTAL TERRORISM POLICY.

We, members of the Muslim community stand firmly against Commonwealth government plans to expand ASIO surveillance powers and to unfairly target Muslims returning from Iraq and Syria under draconian counter-terrorism legislation.

Such expansion of ASIO surveillance powers could grant ASIO intrusive access into the private lives of Australian Citizens not even suspected of committing a crime. The new laws will attack political activism with the surveillance of online activity and the targeting of individuals who express or share views sympathetic to anyone Australia or its allies deem criminal.

We strongly object to the criminalising of ideas and views in the proposed ASIO legislation and the unfair targeting of Muslims travelling to Syria and Iraq using draconian counter-terrorism legislation.

We reject the speculative nature of the Attorney General- Senator George Brandis in stating that Muslims merely travelling to Syria and Iraq will partake in violent activities and return to Australia to partake in violent activities.

We reject Attorney General Brandis’s claim that Muslims returning from Iraq and Syria should be detained and charged in the absence of evidence to any act of criminality.

We condemn the Commonwealth government’s use of the Muslim community to create a climate of fear in Australia to justify these draconian and intrusive measures that will allow for the monitoring of all citizens. This rhetoric has severe implications for the individuals who are unfairly targeted by the government as well as the Australian Muslim community as it fuels Islamaphobia by positioning Muslims as the suspected object of fear.

We condemn the Commonwealth government’s  handing down of counter-terrorism responsibility to Muslim leaders as though terrorism is intrinsically tied to the Islamic faith. We condemn the Commonwealth government’s attempt to draw on support and collaboration from the Muslim community for such draconian measures.

Finally, we call on Muslim leaders to reject any collaboration or partnership with the government in furthering the war on terror and supporting, justifying or excusing unjust, brutal laws.

We request the support of the Muslim community as well as the wider community in rejecting the proposed legislation and targeting of Muslims under current counter-terrorism legislation.
