National Long Service Medal for Nurses

The issue

The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the contribution all health and aged care workers make to our community.  As a Nurse, I am advocating for my colleagues to be recognised for their service, as other professions are in Australian Society.

Like nearly every other country in the world, Australia has a system of honours and awards so its citizens can be recognised for excellence, achievement or meritorious service and contributions to our society.

Honours help define, encourage and reinforce national aspirations, ideals and standards by identifying role models.

We give honours to recognise, celebrate and say thank you to those who make a difference, those who achieve their best and those who serve others.

Medals have nothing to do with heroism.

This is not a request for a 'Covid-19 Medal'

Some Nurses will argue, "I don't need a medal, I want safer staff/patient ratios" They are exactly the people deserving of recognition, these things are not mutually exclusive.

Nurses are worthy of a long service medal, we need to stand together and support this regardless of which side of politics is in power.

Who currently receives long service medals in Australia?

Paramedics and ambulance officers, correctional services, emergency, fire and police forces and voluntary organisations such as lifesaving and rescue groups.

Why aren't Nurses in that group?

Please consider signing, thank you.
