On Monday night the Therapeutic Goods Administration called an emergency meeting to discuss if textured breast implants should be banned due to data linking a specific lymphoma cancer BIA-ALCL directly to these implants.
France banned these implants last week and Canada is following.
The textured breast implants are regularly used in breast reconstruction following cancer.
In Australia 90 women have been diagnosed with the breast implant related cancer and there have been three deaths.
Although surgeons from the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons called for these implants to be banned.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration announced Tuesday night that instead of banning the textured implants it would instead write to manufactures, asking them to provide data on the number of implants that have been supplied in Australia along with physical implant samples of within 10 days.
We are disgusted at this announcement. Especially considering the FDA hearings on breast implants revealed that breast implant manufacturers had been suspending breast implant trials and blatantly ignore participants when they attempted to enquire about their trial’s status.
If you or someone you know is concerned about their breast implants and would like further information you can access the Australian Breast Implant Illness (awareness and support group) in the link below.
