Stop mining in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

The issue

The Great Barrier Reef is a world and national heritage listed area and is one of Australia's greatest environmental areas. The Reef is one of the most amazing ecosystems in the world, supporting an outstanding selection of plants and animals. The Great Barrier Reef is ancient. It is perhaps the reef dates back 20 million years. Climate change is said to one of the Reef's biggest threats. The warmer oceans put stress on the coral and cause coral bleaching. But Climate change isn't the only threat to the reef. Mining in the Great Barrier Reef is causing great destruction. Mining is becoming more and more of a threat and could be the trigger to it's end. The government has approved the worlds largest coal port at Abbot Point, just 50km away from the Whitsunday's. The government is well aware of the destruction this is causing to reef, with the environmental disaster of Gladstone Harbour. Where three gas hubs have turned Curtis Island, the Reef's largest island, into an industrial nightmare. The government is only interested in the money and not about the protection of the reef. However, mining company Adani has been given approval by the government to start mining in the Great Barrier Reef, but before that they they still need to find $10 billion before they can proceed. They are going to try and convince investors to lend the $10 billion. Together we can try and stop this from happening. Your voice counts. It is disgusting how the government can sit back and watch one of our most amazing tourist attractions in Australia and one of the world's most amazing marine parks slip through our fingers. We as Australia can not afford too loose such an amazing eco system. Not only does the Reef mean a lot to All Australians, Queenslander's, workers and our economy, it also means a lot to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The government say that they are protecting the reef and the this mining will do no harm to the Reef, but the affects of this mining can already be seen. The Reef has great history and is Queensland's first heritage listed area. We can not let such a precious piece of Australia be ruined by greedy people who only want money. We want to hear your voice. Stand up to stop this disaster. Is ruining such an amazing ecosystem and marine park really worth all this money ? If we do not do something UNESCO world heritage committee will name our reef as 'World heritage in danger' Not only will this title be embarrassing it means that our reef may not be there for our future generations to see. Please sign this petition, to show the government that enough people care about our Great Barrier Reef and that we need to protect our reef. There are also many other petitions out there for this cause that would also love your support, the more supporters we can the get the closer we become to stopping this nightmare, and get rid of mining in the Great Barrier Reef for ever !!!!!!
