All of Austin's parkland including parks in East Austin and parkland surrounding Lady Bird Lake should be preserved and protected from private development. No parkland in Austin should be used for a 20,000-seat stadium for a private professional soccer team.
In response to public outcry in the mid-1980's, the Austin City Council enacted the Waterfront Overlay to protect and preserve the open green space surrounding Lady Bird Lake between Tom Miller Dam and Longhorn Dam and the Colorado River between Longhorn Dam and US Highway 183.
Butler Shores and Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River parkland along Lady Bird Lake are largely open green space today because of the protections in the Waterfront Overlay. The proposals to build a 20,000-seat stadium on Butler Shores or Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River parkland conflicts with the intent and purpose of the Waterfront Overlay.
Montopolis Neighborhood Association & PODER oppose the use of public park land for private, for-profit development. We don't want to see the balance that we have all worked so hard to create, the balance between nature and humanity, destroyed.
A 20,000-seat major soccer stadium would destroy Roy G. Guerrero Colorado Park and bring more negative environmental impacts to the park and the community.
The real erosion damage would come with the construction of a 20,000-seat stadium. Neighborhood associations, groups and individuals must work together to oppose the destruction of the beautiful Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Park.
Butler Shores parkland is not an appropriate site for a 20,000-seat soccer stadium for many reasons.
- The site is immediately adjacent to environmentally sensitive Barton Creek and home to many heritage and protected trees.
- Transportation infrastructure in the area is woefully inadequate.
- Traffic is already heavily congested and parking is extremely limited in the area.
- The proposal conflicts with the Waterfront Overlay and will significantly reduce the amount of open green space in the area.
The area around Butler Shores parkland already experiences many large, medium, and small recurring events at Zilker Park, Umlauf, Zach Theater, Long Center, Palmer Events Center, and Auditorium Shores.
Please remove Butler Shores, Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Park and all other City of Austin parkland from the list of potential sites for a 20,000-seat stadium for a professional soccer team. Please ensure that Austinites are given the opportunity to vote on any proposal to utilize parkland for a 20,000-seat stadium.
We welcome a professional soccer team to Austin, but not at the expense of our public parkland!
