Save the pedestrian level crossing at Papatoetoe Train Station!

Save the pedestrian level crossing at Papatoetoe Train Station!

The issue

Auckland Transport with the support of the Otara-Papatoetoe local board have decided, without due public consultation to close the pedestrian level crossing at Papatoetoe train station. This restricts access from the northern end to the platform from Shirley road and the park and ride facility. The alternatives offered are untenable due to increasing the distance users have to walk whilst negotiating a steep ramp, proposed stairs and a path on station road that is unsafe at night/early mornings for vulnerable elderly, disabled and women and children. We propose further that consideration is given to installing automatic swing gates at the level crossing to  mitigate health and safety concerns whilst maintaining accessibility. A public meeting to discuss this with all interested parties with Auckland Transport, the local board and Auckland council is requested urgently.
