Planning has already started for two three-lane general vehicle tunnels for between Auckland's CBD and the North Shore, even though this may not ease congestion in the long term.

An electrified rail crossing will provide more capacity for the movement of people at peak times, will reduce carbon emissions and will cost less than the proposed $4bn+ road tunnel crossing.

Recognising that no sound business case exists for the proposed road tunnel crossing, we request Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and the New Zealand Transport Agency work together to prioritise the construction of a rail crossing from downtown Auckland to the North Shore.
