Review the sentences for killing/attacking police officers whether on or off duty

The Issue

PC Neil Doyle was beaten to death in Liverpool on 19 December 2014. PC Doyle was recognised by the individuals whilst on a Christmas night out. He was off duty. We believe that police officers – whether on or off duty – deserve to be protected by the Crown. Recent sentences for assaults on police officers raise serious concerns that little if any regard of this matter is taken into consideration when determining appropriate sentences. We call on the Attorney General to review the sentences handed down to PC Doyle’s killers to determine if they were unduly lenient. As Theresa May stated in her speech at the Police Federation conference in June 2013. Killing a police officer should mean life without parole. Further this petition calls for the Justice Secretary to review the guidelines and set minimum custodial sentences for individuals who attack or murder police officers. It also calls for it to be made compulsory for the crown prosecution service to charge in all cases of assaults against police officers.
