Petition for Huntsville Overpass Mural: To Negate Long-Standing Impact of Racist Graffiti
The Issue
Recently racist graffiti had been spray painted on the Airport Rd. overpass in Huntsville AL. Al.com article on said graffiti And while most times I am a fan of graffiti from an artistic perspective. This was a criminal act of hate and racism. I was shocked, appalled, and hurt to see this.
While the city can and has covered the graffiti, the memory of this event will stay with many of us in the Huntsville community. This from what is said to be the fastest growing, most liberal, and progressive city in Alabama. We may be in the south but I don't think this is the message we want to be sending. I myself will always remember it, especially when I drive by, over, under, or around Airport Rd.
I propose that the City of Huntsville commission a mural on the underpass. We cannot undo what happened, nor take away the memory. But we can put something there, something beautiful, something that says we won't tolerate this hate. That we saw what you did and chose to do something better, something positive, something uplifting.
Huntsville has seen alot of changes towards the positive in recent years, towards the future. Things that are creating a more interactive community. I think a mural will fit with those choices. Let's not let ignorance hinder our forward growth.
