"The Attica Park, by definition, is an enclosed field within the urban environment which has artificial paths for the human-visitors and post-installed plants. The difference between the Attica Park and other city parks is that there one can find imprisoned non human animals as aspectacle, apparently for educational reasons, in a failed attempt to capture the wildlife in a showcase. The term “park” is used for the first time in greece instead of the term “zoo” so that there is the illusion of freedom and a connection with animal sanctuaries, where animals do not live in cages.
These animals that are now captured in cages were previously chased and imprisoned violently, they were removed from their natural habitat, cut off from their packs, just for the sole purpose of spending the rest of their lives within in a few squares, subjected to the torture of exploitation through their captivity and completely attached to their exploiters who provide them with the “5 freedoms”. Only the necessary; “food and water, medical aid, the right environment, the ability to express their natural behavior and the protection from fear and anxiety. If we observe their daily life we will easily realize that their ability to act according to their own will is highly restricted.
As an expansion of the Attica Park, in March of 2010, the Dolphinarium is installed. It will at first be the prison of four dolphins imported from Lithuania’s marine museum. Their lives’ sole purpose is to be merchandise and take part in shows. According to the American Ceta Base- organization and the museum itself, three of these dolphins are wild and were captured in the Black Sea, being the only ones out of ten that survived captivity. The audience is presented with a program –apparently entertaining- in which the dolphins are forced to be synchronized and jump up and down, in and out of the water, towards the cement walls of the pool. Scenes that do not by any means resemble a life of freedom, more like a life of torture.
Because for the dolphins the pool is nothing other than a cage, where they will live in a constant state of submission to their trainers who will starve them and exhaust them. They will live in a way their commanders will choose and they will die when they cannot bring anymore profit.
Unfortunately, someone can realize captivity only when they are in a position in which they can imagine themselves to be the prisoner. More or less, when they face a prisoner, even if they do not feel empathy, they understand that what they have in front of them is a prison. However, us humans cannot realize how big of a torture non human animals go through under the exploitation man subjects them to. By creating a false but at the same time convincing picture of the animals’ lives and by demeaning the tortures they go through in a civil society we view animals as objects and not as beings with emotions. We are sucked into a human-centered perception of everyday life, we cannot see past the exploitation of nature, earth and the non human beings living on it. We have been taught to see everything as a possibility for profit. We ourselves are confined in big cities or –in other words- prisons. A zoo is aimed at those who feel via pre-made emotions in fenced areas filled with control systems. At those who have grown to become at ease with captivity in various forms.
Even though throughout the years a sociopolitical movement for the destruction of prisons for humans has been organized worldwide, not much has been done on the radical side against prisons for animals. When it comes to zoos -both as institutions and as a common practice- most international actions against them are focused on the institutional aspect by asking for better captivity conditions, without questioning the use of animals as a spectacle to begin with. Specifically, when it comes to the Attica Park, many accusations have been published by organizations and many complaints for the delphinarium have been addressed to ministries.
The whole business that profits from a life in captivity and the whole mentality that supports it will not come to an end without constant fights for total liberation. Mediocre attempts for little change that give hope to the exploiters and the state are fruitless and unnecessary. When the radical change of the already existing relations occurs those
mediocre attempts will impact nothing whatsoever. When struggles for freedom negotiate with the dominant power, all that has been achieved can very easily be lost. The fight for total liberation is being given by those who constantly question their freedom and act directly –without any mediators- for the abolishment of any kind of exploitation, until all are free.
