The story focuses on the 16-year-old protagonist after he is transferred to the fictional Shujin High School in Tokyo. Staying with a friend of his parents, he meets up with the troublemaker Ryuji Sakamoto, the withdrawn Ann Takamaki, mysterious art student Yusuke Kitagawa, and a talking, shape-shifting cat creature known as Morgana. During the protagonist's time there, feeling suppressed by their environment, the five form a group known as the "Phantom Thieves of Hearts", working together to explore the "Palace", a castle created by the hearts of people, and steal ill intent from others' hearts to help them: during this quest, they confront adult authority figures opposing them, along with a greater enemy revealed by their activities.
A part of the game is hanging out with your team members to improve their confidant rank for battle benefits later on. But you can also date one of your female team mates you get later on or just all of them at once.
You are given nine dating options and the fact that they are all female as proved to be some what disappointing to fans, especially since their were gay dating options in the past.
A relationship with one of your male team mates is increasingly teased at as being romantic but nothing ever comes of it. Which to some was a huge let down. If you allowed an option to date at least one male character in a patch update it may be possible that the game will gain more fans for being inclusive. Since you'd be showing another sexuality and present it as being normal.
