Defund APD, Refund Communities

The Issue

In Summer 2020, the Atlanta City Council voted to pass a budget which increased the Atlanta Police funding to roughly $218 million, a 6% increase over the last year. This increase in funding passed despite rallying cries throughout the city of Atlanta, and the rest of the country, to end police brutality and defund local police departments. While Atlanta police continue to harass under-resourced neighborhoods, much of Atlanta’s community infrastructure and public school systems remain underfunded, long-time residents are pushed out of neighborhoods due to gentrification, and the COVID-19 pandemic continues to harm Atlanta’s most vulnerable residents.

Defund APD Refund Communities (DARC) is a campaign to divest funds from the bloated budget of the Atlanta Police Department, and reinvest those funds back into communities, where it’s most needed. Where these funds are diverted will be informed by community feedback, and in coalition with like-minded community organizers.

This petition calls upon Atlanta City Council to reduce funding for the Atlanta Police Department in the FY2021 budget, and reinvest these funds back into the hands of the community, using community feedback and surveys, and in communication with community organizers.
