Protect Ngong Road Forest - keep sewer out

Ngong Road Forest is the largest remaining forest in Nairobi. Its 1,224 hectares in the west of the city is home to at least 20 species of mammals, over 120 species of birds, and many reptiles and insects. It is one of the few remaining green spaces in Nairobi.
Beyond the local community and conservation benefits, the existence of Ngong Road Forest is an important force in fighting climate change.
Despite the value it brings to our city, the forest is under constant risk from encroachment, land grabbers, illegal logging and insecurity. And now, the latest threat to comes from the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWDDA).
A proposed sewage line is to cross straight through the forest. Many, many trees would need to make way for its construction. It will cause a lot of destruction, noise and biodiversity loss.
The route identified by AWDDA is to follow Motoine River & Wetlands in the Miotoni Karen section of the forest.
This would pose an enormous threat to survival of this delicate riparian ecosystem. Moreover, the footpath used by all recreational forest users would be totally destroyed.
The Sanctuary section of the forest along Ngong Road, was named this for its many mature native trees species. Removal of any trees in this area would equate to a loss of national heritage for the city.
We as citizens of Nairobi object to this needless destruction. Although we welcome the upgrade to the sewage line for the benefit of the city as a whole, we believe alternative route should be identified that would not require so many trees to be chopped down.
For example a route that runs along the Southern Bypass or along Ngong Road would require limited felling of trees and mainly of non native species of Eucalyptus.
We, as Nairobi city residents, are signing this petition to request your support in preserving Ngong Road Forest for future generations of Nairobians.
We urgently implore AWWDA to to seriously consider alternative routes to the sewage line.
